This book is an outcome of a research study on 'Potential for Entrepreneurial Activities in the Rural Areas of Delhi' - An Explorative Study': The objective of this book is no analyze the occupational structure of the sample village and socio-economic background and the problems faced by the existing rural entrepreneurs in the villages. The study also tries to analyze the institutional support for the promotion of entrepreneurial activities in rural areas. The potential avenues for entrepreneurial activity in rural areas and policy recommendations for the development of Entrepreneurial Activities in the simple village are its highlights. The books also provides the institutional support mechanism which includes financing needs and training facility being provided by various government agencies in the rural parts of Delhi. This book has an advantage of carrying out a field level study to understand the problems and prospects for the promotion of entrepreneurial activates in the rural areas of Delhi at the grass root level. The study found that more than 60 per cent of the sample entrepreneurs were first generation entrepreneurs belonging to a family of farmers. The study revealed that more than 80 per cent of the sample entrepreneurs had problems with capital and 90 per cent of them expected loans at lower interest rates and banks As per the study findings, a comprehensive policy for rural entrepreneurship needs to be evolved at the national level to address the problems of the rural entrepreneurs. This book would help the rural people to realize the opportunities available to them and to use their entrepreneurial skill of varied nature to become a successful rural entrepreneur by utilizing the locally available resources and managerial and technical skills provided by the various promotional agencies. The book is organized in seven chapter. Chapter I gives the theoretical background to the study and presents the macro picture of the status of the rural entrepreneurship and initiatives undertaken by various government departments and agencies. Chapter II provides a detailed analysis on the poverty and employment situation in rural India. Chapter III has a detailed discussion on the need for skill enhancement to achieve inclusive growth in India. Bride profile of Delhi is mentioned in Chapter IV. Chapter V presents the review of few important earlier students on the topic along with a statement of research problem. Objective and the methodology adopted for the study. Chapter VI analyzes the primary data collected from the sample village and the final Chapter VII gives the summary and conclusion along with appropriate suggestion and policy recommendation to the policy making bodies to enhance the living condition of the weaker sections of the society residing in villages.

About The Author

Dr. G.L. Sharma is an eminent professor of Finance and Accounting and is presently serving Lai Bahadur Shastri Institute of Management, Delhi. He is M.Com., Ph.D. from University of Rajasthan and has been in teaching and research for over four decades. During 1982-1985 he was a Reader in Finance, Department of Business Administration, Ahmedu Bello University, Zaria, Nigeria. He also completed a Research Project on ‘Institutional Financing of Small Scale Industries in Nigeria with special reference to Northern States (A Comparative Study of Nigeria and India)’. He has published 6 books including Advanced Cost Accounting, Cost Analysis & Control - A Managerial Approach and Theory & Techniques of Cost Accounting. He has jointly edited three books – ‘Corporate Finance: Emerging Options’, ‘Contemporary Issues in Business Finance & Taxati’ and a book on ‘Leveraging Human Potential for Excellence’. He has contributed large numbers of research articles in leading Journals. Currently, he is working on research project ‘Activity Based Costing in Indian Industry’. Dr. Sharma is a co-author of Implementation of National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme: A case study of Uttar Pradesh. Dr. Sharma is co-author of a nation-wide research project on Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme conducted by LBSIM in the states of Andhra Pradesh, Orissa, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, UP, Orissa and Haryana. The research report was released by the Vice President of India in March 2010.

Dr. Sharma is the Managing Editor of LBS Journal of Management & Research. He is Secretary General of Indian Financial Management Association and also Managing Editor of Indian Journal of Finance & Research. He has widely traveled both in India and Abroad. Dr. Sharma is currently Advisor: Corporate Interface at the LBSIM, Delhi.

Dr. P. Balamurugan, Ph.D. is a Research Associate at Lal Bahadur Shastri Research Center for Public Policy and Social Change. He received his Ph.D. in Economics from Bharathidasan University. Tiruchirappali. During his Ph.D. he received many scholarships which include Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Scholarship for Doctoral Studies in India. He did his Post Doctoral Research at the Department of Economic. University of Allahabad under the UNCTAD India Programme. He was also awarded Sir Ratan Tata Trust Visiting Fellowship (SRTT Fellowship, 2009) at Institute for Social and Economic Change (ISEC) Bangalore. He has punished several research papers in reputed national journals and has contributed chapter in many books. He has presented papers in many national and international seminars. Sandeep Kumar, M.A. (Ph.D. - Pursuing), is an economist by training and has about 7 years of work experience in research and consulting. He has worked as Project Analyst at Amaltas Consulting where he actively worked on various assignment commissioned by UNAIDS, DEID and IFPRI. He worked as Consultant with the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister where he was responsible for conducting research in the field of employment and unemployment issues in India using NSSO data. He has presented papers in both international and national seminar.
