About The Book

It is our immense pleasure to bring out the book “International Economics: Theory and Policy” for T.Y.B.A. Economics, Paper-VIII, of the revised syllabus of Mumbai University as per Credit Based Semester and Grading System with effect from the academic year 2014-2015.

The present book has been written in a very simple and lucid manner, and experience of the faculties who are teaching the paper has been sought to prepare the book.

In the present book, the various sub-topics related to International Economics has been covered, such as in Unit-I: Balance of Payments: The Structure of Balance of Payments; Disequilibrium in BOP – Deficit and Surplus; Types and Causes of Disequilibrium; Measures (Monetary and Non-monetary) to Correct Disequilibrium in the BOP; Marshall-Lerner Conditions and so on.

Whereas in Unit-II: International Economic Institutions: IMF – Financing Facilities and Policies, SDR, Conditionality. WTO – Functions, Objectives and Principles; Agreements with Respect to TRIPS, TRIMS, GATS has been covered.

As far as Unit-III: Economics of Integration is concerned, it includes the Forms of Economic Integration; Objectives of Economic Integration; Theory of Customs Union – Trade Creation and Trade Diversion Effects; Cartels; Trade Blocs – ASEAN, EU, NAFTA, SAARC; Regionalism vs. Multilateralism.

In Unit-IV: Economic Crisis and Lessons: The Concepts of Financial Liberalization and Globalization; Currency Crisis – Meaning and Effects with Reference to East Asian Currency Crisis; European Monetary Union and the Euro Area Debt Crisis – Restructuring Sovereign Debt: Challenges and Issues; Global Financial Crisis (2007-09) has been covered.

About The Author

Dr. Gaikar Vilas Bhau is currently working as Assistant Professor; Department of Economics, Smt. C.H.M. College, Ulhasnagar affiliated to the University of Mumbai. He is Postgraduate recognized teacher and Ph.D. guide in Business Economics, University of Mumbai.

He is former Faculty in Economics, St. Xaviers College, Mumbai. He has presented and published several research papers in reputed national and international Journals. He is also visiting Faculty to MBA, BMS, Engineering, and Law Colleges in Mumbai. He was also NCC and NSS officer in the College. He was coordinator for M.Phil. in Economics of YCMOU, Nashik, Smt. CHM. College centre. He has visited Harvard University, USA for research paper presentation through UGC-Travel Grant.

He has authored books in Economics to F.Y.B.Com and M.Com of University of Mumbai. He has invited as Resource Person and Technical Session Chairpersons in the National and International conferences. He is also on the board of reviewers on the international reputed journals.

Dr. (Mrs) Nini S. Gulla is a Gold Medallist in Economic from Jammu University and Chairperson Board of Studies Economics, Statistics and Business Management at SNDT University. She is presently the Principal of B.M. Ruia Girls’ College. She has been honored with several prestigious titles such as Best Citizen of India 2013, Outstanding Achievement Award in the field of Education, National Mahila Rattan Gold Medal and Women Achiever Award by various National and International Organization. However, as her main area of interest and focus is research, she regularly organizes National and International seminars at her institution. Gender and Nutrition is an extremely important issue of study in the present-day context as is widely seen that young girls of India suffer from various health problems basically due to lack of a nutritious diet. The present volume, thus, is compilation of research articles about Gender and nutrition.
