Globalisation along with information technology brought wonderful shifts in the business processes as well as living of people across the world. Globalisation brought paradigm shifts in human resource management, including labour welfare and social security measures adapted by various countries. Thus, a number of changes took place in labour welfare and social security measures.

Consequently, the significance and utility of labour welfare and social security measures and benefits are manifested that necessitated various universities in the past to introduce a subject on "Labour Welfare and Social Security". The current scenario intensified the utility of the subject even at the under-graduate level and as such the students at B.Com. and BBM level are also expected to know the concepts and practices of labour welfare and social security. Consequently, universities initiated the introduction of the subject on 'Labour Welfare and Social Security' for B.Com. students.

About The Author

Prof. Pulapa Subba Rao has acquired his Ph.D. degree in Management area from Andhra University and has been teaching various courses in the areas of Business Management since 1976. He is a teacher, researcher, trainer, consultant, academic administrator and author in the areas of business and management, with a blend of national and international systems and cultures. He is currently working as Pro Vice-Chancellor (Academic and Student Affairs) of the University of Papua New Guinea. He was the Founding Professor of Business Administration, the Convener, Executive MBA Program Head, Human Resource Management Division of the School of Business Administration and the Director-Academic Audit, University of Papua New Guinea. He worked earlier in Sir CRR College, Sri SathyaSai University, University of Asmara, and SK Institute of Management, Sri Krishnadevaraya University, Anantapur, India.

He was the recipient of `National Merit Scholarship` from Government of India, the `Meritorious Teacher` award from the Government of Andhra Pradesh, India and the President of the India Association of PNG Inc. He is a member of the Advisory Board, Internal Revenue Commission and Technical Advisor, Papua New Guinea Vision: 2010-2050, Government of Papua New Guinea.

Dr. A.M. Sarma obtained a Master`s Degree in Labour and Social Welfare through Xavier Labour Relations Institute (XLRI), Jamshedpur and also a degree in Law from the Ranchi University. His thesis entitled "Industrial Relations in Public and Private Sector Undertakings" earned him a Ph.D. from the said University. Currently, he is a visiting faculty member in some management institutes and also offers specialised training programmes to industrial organisations. Earlier he was a member of the faculty, department of personnel management and industrial relations, at the Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai, and NICMAR, Pune.
