About The Book

Operations and Supply Chain Management has been a key element in the improvement of productivity in businesses around the world. Creating a competitive advantage through operations requires an understanding of how the Operations and Supply Chain Management functions contribute to growth of productivity.

Operations Management designs, operates and improves productive systems - systems for getting workdone. Operations is a function or system that transforms inputs into outputs of greater value. The transformation process itself can be viewed as a series of activities along a value chain extending from supplier to customer. The input-transformation-output process is characteristic of a wide variety of operating systems.

The two disciplines of Operations Management and Supply Chain Management are closely linked and dependent upon each other. In most organisations, Supply Chain Management is part of Operations Management. But one contrast between Supply Chain and Operations Management is that Operations Management occurs internally and Supply Chain Management is mainly concerned with what happens outside the company-obtaining materials and delivering products.

In view of the importance of Supply Chain Management in Operations Management, it is apt to study the two disciplines namely Operations Management and Supply Change Management as an integrated subject.
