Ethical behaviour is the best long-term business strategy for a company – a view that has become increasingly accepted in the recent years. This does not mean that occasions never arise when doing what is ethical will prove costly to a company. Such occasions occur many a times in the life of a company. When we ask the business people to define the word ‘ethical’ 50 per cent defines it as “What my feelings tell me is right?” Another 25 per cent defines it in religious terms as what is in accordance with my religious beliefs. Next 18 per cent define it as what ‘conforms to the golden rule’. The dictionary says ethics is a specialised study of moral right and wrong. It is a study of moral standards and how these apply to the systems and organisations through which modern societies produce. We have a good array of eminent Indian scholars on this subject.
