The present book has been written specifically for BBA Third Semester students of IP University, Delhi. It covers all topics included in the syllabus in an exhaustive and comprehensive manner. The discussion in the book is divided into five units. The organisation, structure and contents of these units is as follows :
Unit I on `Structure of Indian Economy` consists of four chapters. In this unit, we discuss the concepts of economic growth and development, distinction between these concepts, basic characteristics of the Indian economy, national income trends and structure of the Indian economy, and work force participation and occupational structure.
Unit II on `Planning and Economic Development` consists of five chapters. In this unit, we discuss the objectives of economic planning in India, industrial policy 1991, disinvestment in public sector enterprises, Tenth and Eleventh five Year Plans.
Unit III on `Problems in Indian Economy` consists of eight chapters. In this unit we focus on some specific problems that Indian economy is facing like the problem of poverty, unemployment, black money, economic inequalities, concentration of economic power, regional disparities, low capital formation and industrial sickness.
Unit IV on `Indian Economy and Foreign Trade` has four chapters devoted to a discussion of foreign trade trends in India, balance of payments, export-import policy, foreign exchange reserves, multinational corporations, FERA and FEMA.
Unit V on `Indian Economy − Emerging Issues` consists of two chapters − chapters 22 and 23. Chapter 22 discusses WTO and Indian economy while chapter 23 examines the role of foreign capital.
The language of the book has been kept simple and all relevant issues pertaining to the Indian economy have been discussed in considerable detail. For the convenience of students, important statements have been presented in bold italics and main points have been summed up under the caption `Key Points` at the end of each chapter. For the practice of students, a set of questions has been added at the end of each chapter.
