About The Book

Presently, there are many agencies involved in water supply in India and each agency has its own laboratory test practices. In view of the demand for a comprehensive manual by various water quality testing laboratories at Central, State, District, Block and Gram Panchayat levels, effort has been made to prepare a technical manual for water and wastewater analysis which can cater to the needs of various laboratories. The main objective of this manual is to ensure quality control in water testing laboratories.

This manual includes the methods for physico-chemical, microbiological, and biological parameters which can be practiced in all the laboratories. Due emphasis has been given in this manual to basic requirements in water testing laboratory and sampling procedures which are important factors for water and wastewater testing. More than one analytical method has been described for the testing of physico-chemical parameters. Appropriate analytical method can be adopted by the concerned water testing laboratory depending on the equipment/ instrument availability. A separate chapter in the manual describes some useful tests for drinking water treatment. WHO Guidelines and Indian Standards for drinking water have been given as annexures in this manual.

The contributions and suggestions of all the scientific and technical staff involved in water and wastewater analysis at the National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI) is greatly acknowledged. We cannot thank them enough for their cooperation and many gestures.

He has vast experience in analytical methods development for trace pollutants and has worked extensively on the problem of arsenic in drinking water. He has visited Bangladesh as a short-term WHO consultant for development of Field Kit for Arsenic. He was actively engaged in Water Quality Assessment studies carried out by NEERI in different States of India under the Water Mission (WM) programme of Government of India. During the WM programme, He developed a Field Kit for Iron determination in drinking water.

Dr. Pande has visited Canada and Malawi under important assignments of WHO and Commonwealth Science Council. He was an awardee of prestigious INSA Fellowship to visit Russia under INSA-USSR Academy of Sciences, Collaborative Programme 1984-85. He has published more than 100 research papers in different national and international journals of repute. He has also worked as Project Advisor in the Environmental Impact and Risk Assessment (EIRA) Division of the National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI), Nagpur. Presently, He is the Principal of the Vidarbha Institute of Technology (VIT), Umrer Road, Nagpur.

Dr. (Mrs.) Leena Deshpande born on 28.2.1963 ([email protected]) is an Analytical Chemist with Ph.D. in Chemistry from Rashtrasant Tukdoji Maharaj, Nagpur University. Presently working as a Technical Officer in National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI), Nagpur. Her area of specialization is water quality assessment with special reference to Arsenic in drinking water and its mitigation. She has developed Arsenic Field Testing Kit for on-spot screening of water supply sources for contamination due to Arsenic. She has published more than 30 papers in different national and International journals of repute. Presently she is actively engaged in development of Digital Kit for Field Measurement of Arsenic.
